When New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Apply: Letting Go of Timelines in TTC & IVF
When New Year’s resolutions don’t fit your TTC or IVF journey, it’s okay to release timelines.
Brooke Thomas
New Year’s Eve has a way of making you pause - to reflect on what did and didn’t unfold. And if you’re TTC or navigating IVF, this moment can feel heavier than it does for others.
While people around you talk about goals, plans and “fresh starts,” you might be thinking:
“I thought I’d be pregnant by now.” “I didn’t expect another year of trying.” “I’m tired of not knowing what comes next.”
If resolutions don’t feel right for you this year, that’s more than okay. You don’t always need a plan for the New Year, sometimes you just need gentleness.
Why Timelines Feel So Heavy When TTC
1. You’re living in cycles, not calendars
When you’re trying to conceive your sense of time shifts. You measure life in:
- ovulation windows
- scan dates
- blood results
- stimulation days
- embryo transfers
Every cycle feels like an entire emotional year - hope, fear, waiting, disappointment, or relief. So January doesn’t feel like a clean slate. It feels like another cycle to survive.
2. Your body doesn’t care about January
Clinic schedules, medication protocols and symptoms don’t pause for holidays or new-year energy. If your scan is on January 2nd, you go. If your injections fall on New Year’s Eve, you do them. If you’re waiting on results, the date on the calendar doesn’t soften the anxiety.
There’s something uniquely draining about following a timeline that isn’t yours to choose.
3. You’ve carried expectations for a long time
Most people don’t see the silent hopes you’ve held onto - the ones that whispered, “maybe by next year…” Another January can feel like a spotlight on what didn’t happen, what you wished for, or what you quietly grieved.
The emotional weight of that can be enormous.
4. You’re already carrying enough
Tracking.
Injecting. Recovering. Waiting. Coping.
You’ve spent the year navigating medical, emotional, and physical terrain that most people will never understand. You don’t need resolutions to “push” or “improve.” You need space to breathe.
A Softer Approach to the New Year
✨ 1. Release the idea of being “behind”
There is no universal fertility timeline. You’re not late. You’re not behind. You’re not failing.
You’re moving at the pace your body and circumstances allow and that pace is worthy of compassion, not comparison.
✨ 2. Choose intentions, not resolutions
Intentions don’t demand outcomes. They create grounding, not pressure.
Gentle intentions might be:
“I want to treat myself kindly.” “I want to listen to what my body needs.”
These are softer, slower, and completely valid.
✨ 3. Honour the year you just lived
This year wasn’t empty. It held effort, appointments, healing, fear, courage, and tiny moments of hope.
Take a moment to acknowledge that emotional labour. It counts more than any goal on a list.
✨ 4. Create emotional space, not goals
You don’t need to plan who you’ll be by June. You don’t need to map out milestones.
Sometimes the most healing thing you can offer yourself is room - room to feel, to pause, to not decide anything yet.
Let this season be about breathing, not achieving.

As the New Year approaches remember…
You don’t need to reinvent yourself. You don’t need to meet expectations. You don’t need to set goals if your heart feels full enough already.
Your journey - slow, unpredictable, emotional - is still moving. You are allowed to release the pressure. You are allowed to enter the new year softly.
Is it normal to struggle with New Year’s talk when TTC or in IVF?
Yes. Timelines and milestones can amplify emotions and highlight expectations you didn’t meet.
What if I feel like I’m “falling behind” in my fertility journey?
Your fertility journey follows its own rhythm. You are not behind; you’re simply on a different path.
Does Carea support IVF journeys?
Yes, the Trying To Conceive: IVF mode offers emotional tools, tracking and supportive resources personalised to your journey.
